Birth
The original image came from the album cover, “Ma Gangsta” by the rap group Beantown Mafia. The first image macros featuring Scumbag Steve were uploaded to Reddit. The thread reached the front page of Reddit on January 21, 2011 and reached over8607 upvotes prior to being archived. The kid in the image was identified by a commenter in the Reddit thread as Blake Boston. Blake Boston also goes by the name Weezy B.
Hype
On January 27, 2011, scumbagsteve.com was registered. On February 11, 2011, a compilation of Scumbag Steve images were posted to BuzzFeed. On February 11, 2011, The Daily mail posted an article about Blake Boston’s reaction to becoming a Meme. There is a facebook fan page for Scumbag Steve with over 14,000 likes.
The Scumbag Hat
Scumbag Steve’s trademark hat photoshopped onto other people and objects have emerged. The hat is a New Era Red Sox ‘A-Tooth’ brown fitted hat.
